Interview conducted by Ruth Evans. Mayfield registered for the selective service in 1969; however, he also wanted to attend college, so he joined the ROTC at Texas A&M. In 1973, Mayfield was commissioned as a signal officer in the US Army, but because the Vietnam War was winding down, he was never deployed. He elected to leave the service in 1978, and became a Biology and Physics teacher at his hometown high school. In 1983, Mayfield joined the Army National Guard in Austin, TX, and became a member of the Signal Corps. He trained at Fort Hood, TX for mainly Cold War communications scenarios. It was also in 1983, that Mayfield received a call about the "Teacher in Space" program at NASA. There he worked with other trainers to send Christa McAuliffe into space. From 1983-1989 he helped design and implement new communication equipment and strategies for the Army National Guard. In 1990, Mayfield began teaching at Seton Hall University as an ROTC instructor, and later began working at the Pentagon. Mayfield was promoted to Colonel in 1999 while working in Atlanta. He also witnessed the Pentagon bombing of September 11th, and describes how he and a colleague wanted to help during the aftermath. Mayfield retired in March of 2004 with numerous medals and citations.

Interview conducted by Eileen Hurst. Kilgore enlisted with the National Guard in 1937. When Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941, he became activated with the US Army. When he began basic training in the army, he was promoted to sergeant and then sent to Officer Candidate School. He quickly moved up through the ranks and was promoted to first lieutenant shortly after completing OCS. He was transferred to Foggia, Italy where he remained for almost 2 yrs, and was responsible for the ordnance supply and maintenance company. This company was responsible for making sure the infantry had enough machine guns, ammunition, and bombs (among other things) to fight the ongoing battles in Italy. Kilgore was the commanding officer of this company and describes what had to be accomplished in such a position, and the living conditions that the soldiers were met with. He arrived home in December of 1945, but remained in the reserves. In the fall of 1950, he was called to serve because of the Korean War, but remained in the United States where he worked at Fort Dix. He was discharged in the spring of 1950 partly due to his family obligations. Kilgore then worked as a construction supervisor and owned his own house building business in Connecticut. He joined the VFW in 1948, and is still an active member, having recently assisted with the building of a war monument in Avon, CT.

Interview conducted by Shawn Ingraham. Frank Johnson enlisted in the US Army just after his graduation from high school in 1942. Pearl Harbor had been bombed during his senior year of high school, and it was very important to him to become a part of the military. He did his basic training at Camp Edwards, Mass., where he also joined the 110th Anti Aircraft Artillery battalion. His unit was sent overseas to Europe just before Christmas of 1943, riding over on the Queen Mary with over 20, 000 other troops. Johnson's first combat experience was on D-Day at Omaha beach in France, which he describes in great detail. His unit also fought in battles for the Liberation of Paris, The Battle of the Bulge, and the battle for Remagen Bridge. After the fighting ended, Johnson's unit was in charge of helping the "displaced persons" left in Germany. Many of these people were citizens that the Germans had captured and put to work in factories, etc. for no wages. When the war in Europe was officially declared over, Johnson's unit began training for the impending battles in Japan, however, after the Atom bomb was dropped, they were instead sent back to the United States for discharge. After his discharge, he went to college on the GI Bill, and became a teacher, guidance counselor, and coach at Naugatuck High School, where he retired from.
